Mazda Motor Corp. said Monday that its compact crossover based on the Minagi concept will be called the CX-5.The CX-5 will be Mazda's first production vehicle to combine its new design theme--Kodo, or Japanese for "soul of motion"--and several new technologies called Skyactiv, which include a direct-injection engine, a more efficient transmission and a stronger, more lightweight body.
The CX-5 will join Mazda's global lineup in 2012 and will have its international debut at the Frankfurt auto show in September, Mazda said.
The vehicle is expected to replace the Mazda Tribute. The Tribute shares a platform with the Ford Escape.
The Tribute and Escape are built in Kansas City, Mo., but Ford plans to assemble the next-generation Escape beginning late this year in Louisville, Ky.
The CX-5 will slot below the CX-7 crossover in size and price. Mazda also sells a larger crossover, the CX-9.
The automaker is not releasing any details or pricing information about the CX-5.
The Minagi concept will have its U.S. debut at the New York auto show on Wednesday April 20. It was shown in March at the Geneva auto show.
The Minagi also features Skyactive technologies. Mazda plans to introduce Skyactiv in most models by 2015, starting this year with vehicles sold in Japan, the United States and Australia.
