Unlike most other cars in this class, there’s no telescoping function for the steering column, so you must slide forward and have your knees bent at an uncomfortable angle (good thing there’s a driver’s knee airbag) or slide back and reeeeeach for the wheel. Neither option bodes well for long-distance comfort. If the tiller offered fore and aft motion, comfort would run at the top of the class, rivaling that of Chevy’s new Sonic.
At least the majority of the car seems thoroughly vetted. Unlike the dull cabins found in competitors like the Nissan Versa or the 10Best-winning Honda Fit, the Yaris’s clubroom appears to have actually been designed. The materials are much improved over the previous-generation car’s, the three-knob HVAC controls are a simple solution, and the dash gets “rice paper” graining.

Actually, a better question is, "What isn't it?" Over an In-N-Out burger, my Mazda PR maven hammered home the fact that the Mazda CX-5 is not a Tribute, nor is it a new Ford Escape under the skin. In fact, not a single aspect of the CX-5 is shared with Ford's new crossover, a fact that Mazda engineers were adamant about during the model's U.S. debut at the Los Angeles auto show.
Instead, the 2013 CX-5 is Mazda's homegrown entry in the burgeoning compact-crossover class. It also marks the first appearance of the brand's "Kodo" design language, as well as the first vehicle to feature fully integrated Skyactiv technology.
What is Skyactiv? That's a better question, and one answered most ambiguously by CX-5 program manager Hideaki Tanaka, who claims it's "sustainable zoom-zoom." Translated, Skyactiv is a suite of engineering advances centered on making the chassis lighter and stiffer, then combining it with ultra-efficient gasoline and diesel powertrains.
Take, for example, the Skyactiv-G engine that will be standard on the 2013 CX-5: It's a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with direct injection, a 13.0:1 compression ratio, variable valve timing and an exotic (for a crossover, anyway) 4-2-1 exhaust header design. The result is an engine that is 10 percent lighter, 15 percent more fuel efficient and produces 15 percent fewer CO2 emissions than its predecessor.
About that diesel: In some markets, the CX-5 will get a 2.2-liter Skyactiv diesel four-cylinder engine with 170 hp. Mazda has confirmed that the engine will come to North America during the 2013 calendar year, but it hasn't said in which vehicle. Current rumors have it arriving under the hood of the company's next midsize sedan.
Six-speed Skyactiv manual and automatic transmissions have been designed for smoother and quicker shifts while helping to improve fuel efficiency, thanks to weight savings and friction reduction.
Thanks to an all-new chassis incorporating 61 percent high-tensile steel, Mazda engineers were able to cut weight in the structure while improving stiffness by 30 percent over the current structure underpinning the Mazda 3. Continuous high-strength ring structures are said to boost crashworthiness, also serving as suspension mounting points because of their inherent stiffness.
Finally, the 2013 CX-5 is the first vehicle to wear Mazda's new Kodo design language, which is said to translate to "the motion of living creatures." We're not sure a cheetah is going to confuse its mate with this particular compact crossover, but the CX-5 does have a sense of rear weight bias not unlike the Infiniti FX, and the overall effect is attractive if not groundbreaking.

Along with the miniscule Urban Concepts, Audi is unwrapping the electric-powered A2 concept -- which previews a forthcoming subcompact model -- at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Like the original A2, which debuted in 2000, the new concept is diminutive in size. In fact, the concept is within half an inch of the original in all dimensions, and at 149.6 inches long, it’s almost a half-foot shorter than the new A1. Like the original, the A2 concept utilizes an aluminum space frame -- something that lent the first A2 a trim curb weight and a big price tag. The new concept wears a combination of aluminum panels and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) to help keep weight down.
Powering the A2 concept is a transversely-mounted electric motor good for 116 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque sent through a single-speed transmission to the front wheels. Juice comes from a lithium-ion battery pack that stores a total of 31 kWh of energy, though only 24 kWh is available to move the vehicle. Audi claims a top speed of 93 mph and a 0 to 62 mph time of 9.3 seconds, thanks to the A2’s lightweight design and powerful electric motor. From McPherson struts and a rear torsion beam axle underpin the A2.
According to Audi, the setup should give the A2 a range of approximately 124 miles; with a full recharge taking a scant 1.5 hours on a 400-volt, three-phase charger or four hours on a standard 230-volt European outlet. Audi has also incorporated a contactless charging method for the A2 concept, so no plug is needed.

Let’s look at a brief sales comparison, just to see where the numbers are. In 2010, Hyundai sold 29,122 Genesis models. So far in 2011, Genesis accounted for 9,536 sales (calendar year-to-date through April). BMW sold 39,488 5-Series last year and 16,721 2011 CYTD. Cadillac CTS sold 45,656 (coupe, sedan and wagon, as well as CTS-V variants) in 2010 and 18,519 January through April this year. Mercedes-Benz E-Class sold 60,922 units in 2010 and 20,411 in 2011 CYTD (although this includes sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon models). Infiniti G sedan accounted for 41,653 sales in 2010. The front-wheel drive Lexus ES racked up 2010 sales of 48,652 while Lexus GS (available in RWD and AWD) sold just 7,059. Buick LaCrosse, meanwhile, cross-shopped with Genesis as an upscale family sedan, which comes in FWD and AWD models, reported 2010 sales of 61,178.

Speaking of performance, Hyundai says the V-8-powered Genesis does zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
Starting price: $33,000 for Genesis 3.8, $43,000 for Genesis 4.8.

Akrapovic has teamed up with BMW to promote their exhaust systems in a new exclusive video called „The Chase”. It features BMW S 1000 RR superbike with rider Rico Penzkofer and BMW E92 M3 with driver Nico Bastian. The two proffesionals went head-to-head on the racetrack in some fast action sequences.
The BMW E92 M3 is powered by a 4.0 liter naturally aspirated V8 with maximum output of 442HP and 435Nm of torque. The additional power came from the Akrapovic Evolution system. The curb weight of the car is 1620 kg. However, it is no match for the staggering S 1000 RR, which weighs just 197kg and has 198HP and 118Nm. It also has Akrapovic Evolution system.
The M3 and RR start from opposite ends of the racetrack, each racer vying to be the first to pass his opponent. Sounds of exhausts and a dynamic filming style keep adrenaline levels sky-high as we finally hear the words: “gentlemen, start your engines”.
The Chase is the perfect showcase for two of BMW’s most iconic machines – M3 and the superbike S 1000 R, as well as the craftsmanship and power of Akrapovic products.
The movie is directed by Ryan McManus. It looks slick and clean, with plenty of close-up shots of the car and motorcycle.

Mazda Motor Corp. said Monday that its compact crossover based on the Minagi concept will be called the CX-5.
The CX-5 will be Mazda's first production vehicle to combine its new design theme--Kodo, or Japanese for "soul of motion"--and several new technologies called Skyactiv, which include a direct-injection engine, a more efficient transmission and a stronger, more lightweight body.
The CX-5 will join Mazda's global lineup in 2012 and will have its international debut at the Frankfurt auto show in September, Mazda said.
The vehicle is expected to replace the Mazda Tribute. The Tribute shares a platform with the Ford Escape.
The Tribute and Escape are built in Kansas City, Mo., but Ford plans to assemble the next-generation Escape beginning late this year in Louisville, Ky.
The CX-5 will slot below the CX-7 crossover in size and price. Mazda also sells a larger crossover, the CX-9.
The automaker is not releasing any details or pricing information about the CX-5.
The Minagi concept will have its U.S. debut at the New York auto show on Wednesday April 20. It was shown in March at the Geneva auto show.
The Minagi also features Skyactive technologies. Mazda plans to introduce Skyactiv in most models by 2015, starting this year with vehicles sold in Japan, the United States and Australia.

The good: The 2011 Acura RL's standard all-wheel-drive vectors torque for improved cornering. Forward-facing radar allows adaptive cruise control and emergency automatic braking.
The bad: Acura has not implemented the same navigational and audio system improvements in the RL that it has in other models.
The bottom line: With only moderate tech updates over the years, the 2011 Acura RL lags behind the cutting-edge competition, and has trouble justifying its over-$50K price. While other automakers push the technological edge with their top sedans, Acura remains strangely resistant to change. The 2011 Acura RL shows some improvement in its drivetrain and driver assistance features, but the company installs more advanced cabin tech features in its TL and TSX models. And the RL falls far short of top sedans from European manufacturers.
Of course, the RL has never exuded the prestige of the Audi A8 or the Mercedes-Benz S-class. And it keeps a comparatively low price tag, suggesting Acura does not really want to compete in that big, executive sedan segment. The RL keeps its aspirations lower, offering reasonable comfort rather than plush luxury.
In the cabin, the RL sports as much plastic as it does wood trim, and thin strips of metal coexist with leather seats. Luxury tech touches include heated and cooled seats and a smart-key system that unlocks the doors with a touch of the handle. But instead of a push-button start, the RL uses a sort of fake key handle on the steering column, as if the company merely retrofitted a standard ignition lock.

The passenger seat was outfitted with ten-way power control (just like the driver's seat). Leg room was increased in the rear while the paneling of the vehicle saw an increase in insulation. This made riding inside the RL much quieter than before, as road noise, tire noise, and sound from the exhaust were much less audible. The Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, and its corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon Hybrid and Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, may not be the greenest hybrids around, but try going off-road, hauling eight passengers and towing a boat or horse trailer in your Prius. Reviewers say that for people who truly need the capabilities of a large SUV but want a smaller carbon footprint, the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid makes sense.
However, that means the Tahoe Hybrid makes sense for a fairly narrow slice of the population. The Tahoe Hybrid is expensive: it starts at about $13,000 more than the conventional Tahoe. For that money, you could buy a gas-only Tahoe as a tow vehicle, but get a fuel-sipping Ford Fiesta (28/37 mpg) or Kia Forte (26/36 mpg) to commute in. While the Tahoe Hybrid offers a significant increase in fuel economy compared to the gas-only version, you need to remember that the gas-only Tahoe didn’t have great fuel economy numbers to begin with. The Tahoe Hybrid promises a 25 percent improvement in fuel economy in mixed driving, but because the gas-only Tahoe’s 15/21 mpg fuel economy is so low, hybrid buyers may be less-than-impressed with the Tahoe Hybrid’s 20/23 mpg fuel economy rating.

The C5 Chevy Corvette premiered for the 1997 model year and stayed in production until 2004. With a top speed of around 171 miles per hour, it was also the sleekest and curviest version of the model to be produced. The C5 was equipped with an LS1 5.7L V8 good for approximately 345 horsepower and mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Horsepower was increased to 350 in 2001. And although the model debuted as a coupe only, a convertible version was released in 1998. The Z06 replaced the ZR-1 using an upgraded LS6 engine capable of 385 horsepower, which was increased even more to 405 for the last two years of the C5's assembly.

The current Chevy Corvette is as full of American muscle as it gets. Available in three trims (base, Z06, and ZR1), even the standard Corvette shows off heavy-duty performance with a 6.2L V8 with 430 horsepower and is married to either a six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission. The Z06 steps it up a notch with a 7.0L V8 that showcases over 500 HP but it's the top-level ZR1 that burns up the pavement. For the 2010 model year, Nissan delivers on its much-anticipated promise of a roadster version of the resurgent 370Z sports car. Unlike the 350Z roadster of two years ago, the 2010 Nissan 370Z droptop appears to be very deliberately designed and the car boasts stunning good looks. Also new for 2009 is track-ready Nissan 370Z NISMO edition.

The 2010 Nissan 370Z is a two-seat sports car that is newly available in five different flavors; there are the standard coupe and convertible offerings, both available in base or Touring trims, and a new-for-2010 NISMO edition that gets both performance and visual enhancements. When the Nissan 370Z debuted last year, the automotive press was largely impressed with the overall styling, which Car and Driver called "largely successful." The curvaceous exterior was originally penned with a roadster model in mind, so the addition of the new convertible model is much more than an afterthought, and it certainly shows in the design. Reviews read by TheCarConnection.com rave about the Nissan 370Z convertible, which Automobile says "may be Nissan's first graceful convertible." Left Lane News reviewers revel in the attention that their 370Z roadster generates, bragging that "pedestrians, as well as drivers of cars far hotter than the 370Z would cast longer than passing glances along the flanks of" the Nissan sports car.

The performance-oriented Nissan 370Z NISMO edition also gets restyled, and Motor Trend feels that "everything about the all new Nissan NISMO 370Z is better: interior, exterior, and especially the performance." The biggest distinguishing features of the NISMO edition are, according to Autoblog, "a larger rear wing, new bumper, and an aggressive front splitter," along with lightweight wheels and tires. Not all of the styling elements are successful, however, and Motor Trend cautions that "the headlight and taillight clusters are over styled," with sharp angles that combine to form a very unique appearance.

The bold styling of the 350Z lends itself to images of underground races, glitzy car shows, and highway superiority.

More than 10 years after it was first introduced, the RAV4 continues to shine for its excellent combination of power, performance and interior comfort. The RAV4, last redesigned in 2006, is one of the most well-rounded vehicles in its class. It boasts an affordable base price, excellent fuel economy and a long list of accolades. The RAV4 is consistently compared to the Honda CR-V, which comes with a nearly identical base price, but worse fuel economy. A big plus for the CR-V, however, is its better-rated interior and easier-to-use tailgate design. The RAV4's cargo door swings to the right, which can make loading and unloading difficult. Apart from that, the RAV4 bests the CR-V on nearly all fronts. It boasts V6 power and an optional third-row seat, both rare features within the compact SUV class. Several reviewers also prefer the RAV4's refined exterior to the CR-V's awkward front grille. Of course, the RAV4 isn't perfect. Reviewers warn that options, including the V6 engine and third-row seat, can quickly inflate its otherwise affordable base price. And though its fuel economy is good, it's not the best in its class -- the two other gasoline-powered SUVs in the RAV4's price range, the Chevrolet Equinox and Jeep Patriot, net more miles per gallon. Still, the RAV4 continues to be Toyota's best-selling SUV, even in the economic downturn. In June 2009, the RAV4 led Toyota's light truck sales with 10,054 units.

Toyota has unveiled a new lightweight, sporty concept car inspired by an iconic coupe from the 1980s, saying its vision of the future was both mean and green. With a low centre of gravity and a special two-litre boxer engine developed by partner Subaru, the rear-wheel drive FT-86 is said to handle like a race car but with less damage to the environment. The cherry-red concept car, which will go on display at this month's Tokyo Motor Show, aims to rekindle passion for its Corolla AE86 of the 1980s. "Everyone thinks sports cars won't sell but there is a huge demand, particularly among middle-aged men who have fond memories of the Corolla 86 and who would like to drive it once again," Toyota engineer Tetsuya Tada said on Tuesday. "When green cars become prevalent, consumers will choose brands that offer something extra," Tada said at a preview of the vehicle. Toyota will also display a new version of its electric concept car -- based on its compact Toyota iQ -- at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public from October 24 through November 4.

The four-seater FT-EV II runs on lithium-ion batteries and has a top speed of more than 100 kilometres (62 miles) an hour. Toyota, the pioneer of petrol-electric hybrid cars, has said it aims to launch an electric car in the United States by 2012. "We think the time is almost ripe for cost levels, batteries and performance to evolve one step further," said Akihiro Yanaka, who oversees the FT-EV II project. The electric concept car, less than three metres (9.9 feet) long, has solar panels on its roof and is designed to be easily recharged at shopping malls or at home. The Mainichi newspaper reported Tuesday that Toyota and Subaru-maker Fuji Heavy Industries were considering jointly developing electric vehicles that could go on sale in the early 2010s. SEOUL (AFP) – Hyundai Mobis said Wednesday it has won a two-billion-dollar order from US automaker Chrysler in what it called the largest-ever contract for a South Korean autoparts maker.
